About Shekhar Sane

"Artist Shekhar Sane", is a very popular and distinguished name among the followers of Shree Sai Baba and Shree Swami Samartha Maharaj. He has painted more than 4500 portraits of them in particular, along with several other saints and spiritual personalities.

We can say that Shekhar is the chosen one by Shree Sai Baba as his birth place is Shirdi. He is a great devotee of Baba and is blessed by him, since childhood. Shekhar holds a degree of Commercial Art from Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune. He has been exploring and experimenting his talent through various forms of painting such as sketching, portraits and painting landscapes with watercolours. He was and is till date an ardent follower of Shree Sai Baba, and he was drawn towards Shree Swami Samartha Maharaj as well, rather called for his divine intervention. His devotion towards them, and their grace upon him, gradually led painting spiritual personalities to be the work of his life.

Apart from his educational background and spiritual devotion, he has strived to enhance his knowledge and gained wisdom by studying the great literatures of Vedas, Upanishadas and Puranas. This is why one will find his paintings to be the applications of deep knowledge and to be conceptually correct.

He has captured different moods and forms of the deities. Today his paintings are displayed in most of the temples and houses of the devotees. They have been exhibited through various exhibitions, in places like Mumbai and Pune. As expressed by the spectators, standing before his creations and looking at them sends a wave of shiver down the spine. One remains dazzled by the radiance and is enveloped with divine contentment, love and warmth. The eyes are painted to be so lively and realistic, that one will not doubt the actual presence of God in the painted figure. This explains why eyes in the painting are what Shekhar's paintings are mainly famous for.

This form of art perhaps requires the artist to be a surrendered devotee as well. Unlike other forms of painting, this form requires the artist to work with a heart filled with devotion, apart from display of skills by the brain. Along with these characteristics, an exuberant passion and vivid imagination have led Shekhar to achieve this success, to create paintings with expressions stupendous in magnitude and sublime in content. He truly gives a 'Form to the Formless'. All this as he says, is due to Maharaj's grace and blessings showered upon him. His spiritual evolution towards divinity takes place with the evolution of his art.

In 2018, 100 years will be completed to Shree Sai Baba's samadhi. It is the occasion on which Shekhar looks forward to some special creations. It would be a delight to see what Shree Sai Baba will guide Shekhar to create, this time.

Artist Thought

Since my childhood I always aspired to be artist and was spiritually inclined but never did I conceive that this spirituality will be the base of my artistic creations. I don’t remember when, how or what led me on this path to explore this particular field. Now as I look back, I realize that my journey so far has been guided by two very influential personalities in the form of my grandfather and Gurunath Walawalkar.

Gurunath Walawalkar was the grandson of Anandanath Maharaj (Sanjivan Samadhi – 1903), who was the greatest devotee of Swami Samartha Maharaj. The incarnation of Sai Baba is a ‘Purnavtar’ or ‘The Complete Incarnation’. The word ‘Sai’ is derived from the word ‘Sakshat Ishwar’ meaning ‘God himself’. Anandanath Maharaj played an important role in bringing forth the greatness of Sai Baba. In 2003, while painting ‘Swami Samartha Darbar’, I incidently came across Gurunath Walawalkar(fondly called as ‘Anna’), who influenced me deeply.

His continuous love, support and guidance set me firmly on my path from there on. Anna’s influence in my life destined me to meet Pujaniya Lathkar Maharaj(Aurangabad). He is a divine personality, and has been a medium through which Swami Samartha Maharaj gives discourses for the betterment of mankind. I am lucky to be a disciple of such a divine personality.

It is my firm belief that all the spiritual incarnations and personalities , though they exist in different bodies with different faces, they are the representatives of the only one infinite power which is called as ‘Guru Tatva’. Guru Tatva is infinite and one. No one is greater than the other, but they all are collectively the greatest power, and hence they are absolutely one. This infinite power just changes forms or bodies and blesses us in various ways in the forms of different spiritual personalities. Every one is one and the same. May be because of this type of thinking, people say that every spiritual personality which Sadguru’s blessings make me paint looks natural and live as the personality itself is present over there.

Mostly, we find people being busy in differentiating one incarnation or God from another. This supreme infinite power is shapeless, endless and abstract. The ‘Omkar Beej’ which is the ‘Pranav Beej’ meaning ‘The Primary Sound’ is said to represent this power. Omkar represents/means ‘Maha Ganesh Tatva’, or Lord Ganesha-It consists of three main sounds, namely ‘aa’, ‘oo’ and ‘ma’ i.e. ‘Akaar’, ‘Ukaar’ and ‘Makaar’. These three sounds represent/mean ‘Bramha’, ‘Vishnu’ and ‘Mahesh’. These three are together known as ‘Datta Guru’. Therefore, by transitivity, it is clear that ‘Maha Ganesh Tatva’ or ‘Lord Ganesha’ means ‘Lord Datta guru’. Hence, Lord Maha Ganpati and Lord Datta Guru are the same. This infinite power has names also like ‘Krushna Tatva’, ‘Shiva Tatva’, ‘Parabramha Tatva’, etc. barring ‘Guru Tatva’. Different people worship different Gods, according to their likings. But the reality is that we just feel that we are worshipping different powers. Actually, we are worshipping the same infinite power, as every worship leads to the same spiritual enlightenment. Hence, even if we appear to be leading our lives on different paths, our destination will always remain the same.
